In a recent statement to the press Network Rail announced they had suspended some of their contractors for working in an unsafe manner and were investigating the incident.
Although they did not give any specific details the incident took place in Lincoln on the Central Station refurbishment program.
I believe Network Rail have shown a commitment to Health and Safety by their actions and have proved that as "prime contractor" they are fulfilling their obligations.
Are we doing the same?
Do we ensure that:-
1. We employ competent contractors?
2. Do we review their method statements and ensure they are adequate?
3. Do we monitor our contractors to ensure they are working safely?
4. Do we take action when contractors stray form their method statement?
It is true that Network Rail has been found lacking in past years but this indicates they are now taking there responsibility seriously. ARE WE?
