Vehicle struck elevated platform

Two workmen were thrown from the basket of a mobile elevating platform when it was struck by a lorry at the side of the A19 near Bootham, York, in August last year. Serious injury resulted but both survived.
The workmens' employer, William Birch & Sons Ltd, had provided training, information and equipment but it failed to ensure that the particular risks involved in the work at this location were adequately assessed and controlled; it was also alleged that the employee failed to take reasonable care while setting up and operating the platform.
The employee was fined £2,500 with costs of £3,500 at York Crown Court having breached S.7(a) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
William Birch and Sons Ltd of York, was fined £12,000 with costs of £2,500.

HSE warns that firms exposing untrained workers to asbestos will be penalised
The HSE is warning that firms exposing workers to asbestos without training will be penalised. It also reiterated that electrical contracting companies and other building and refurbishment trades must provide suitable asbestos awareness training to employees or face prosecution.
