Safety Bill set to clear Commons

Legislation which will sanction tougher penalties for those who breach health and safety laws is expected to clear the Commons today.
The Health and Safety (Offences) Bill – which was drafted by former minister Keith Hill and has Government support – has already been given a second reading and completed its detailed committee stage.
It was due to be given its third reading later today before passing to the Lords.
Mr Hill told MPs: "My Bill will ensure appropriate punishment for those who are negligent or would seek to cut costs by infringing health and safety arrangements."
Under the legislation, the maximum fine in magistrates' courts will be raised to £20,000 "for most offences" and imprisonment would be made an option for a wider range of breaches.

HSE warns that firms exposing untrained workers to asbestos will be penalised
The HSE is warning that firms exposing workers to asbestos without training will be penalised. It also reiterated that electrical contracting companies and other building and refurbishment trades must provide suitable asbestos awareness training to employees or face prosecution.
