Retailer fined over car park death

Asda has admitted breaching health and safety laws in the circumstances of the death of a shopper who was killed by a blow from an unsecured barrier which was caught by the wind and entered his car through its windscreen in an incident in May 2002 at its Cardiff Bay site.
The company was fined almost £270,000 including costs at Newport Crown Court, investigation established that an employee had experienced difficulty with the barrier to the extent that she could not place it in a position that would enable it to be secured by its padlock.
The company attributed the tragedy to a failure of human error at a local level.

HSE warns that firms exposing untrained workers to asbestos will be penalised
The HSE is warning that firms exposing workers to asbestos without training will be penalised. It also reiterated that electrical contracting companies and other building and refurbishment trades must provide suitable asbestos awareness training to employees or face prosecution.
