A recent accident we investigated in a woodworking factory resulted in an employee needing hospital treatment for lacerations to his thumb and being away from work for over a week.
The cause of this accident was the employee using a circular saw with the guard in the raised position therefore not providing the desired protection. He had been spoken to before this accident about not having the guard in the correct position.
However as with many accidents we have investigated there were underlying issues, which if they had been addressed the accident could easily have been prevented
The main issues were:
1. The employee had not been made aware of the risk assessments or safe working procedure in place for the machine
2. There was no training syllabus written for the safe use of the machine
3. The employee's actions despite being spoken to on the previous occasion
We think the actions required to have avoided this accident are very easily implemented. It's always a shame when these things happen and someone is hurt and things are put into place afterwards. If you can identify with any of these issues let us know so we can advise you on your situation.
